“There’s a place for us… somewhere a place for us. Peace and quiet and open air wait for us somewhere. There’s a time for us… someday a time for us. Time together with time to spare, time to look, time to care, someday, somewhere, we’ll find a new way of living… we’ll find a way of forgiving… somewhere. There’s a place for us… somewhere a place for us. Hold my hand and we’re halfway there, hold my hand and I’ll take you there, somehow… someday… somewhere”.
Tickets now on sale from Tarvin Post Office. Bar open. Doors open 18:45
As there is just the one film, we are starting half an hour earlier. Doors will open at 6:45 so you can come along, get your seat and a drink before the action begins.
In 1961 a film adaptation of a successful Broadway musical was released, with music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. It won 10 academy awards becoming the record holder for the most wins for a musical and is regarded as one of the greatest musical films of all time. Stephen Speilberg has released a modern day adaptation of this film
Set in 1950s New York it features the rivalry between 2 gangs for the control of Upper West Side, The white Jets led by Riff and the Peurto Rican Jets, let by Bernardo. The Jets challenge the Sharks to a ‘rumble’ after a forthcoming dance. A love story develops between Riff’s best friend Tony and Bernardo’s sister.
Rita Merino who played Anita in the 1961 production plays Valentina
Songs that will stay in your head for days afterwards and stupendous, colourful dancing. Gang culture is in our news every day along with its tragic consequences, just as much as it was back in the 60s
*** Distanced seating. Wearing of masks advisory.***
